Senator Graham had served as a mediator between Zelensky, Netanyahu, and the White House, fostering understanding between the parties. Both discussions were held behind closed doors, away from the press.
Following the meetings, Zelensky expressed gratitude to Trump on social media for the positive engagement and the ongoing support from the Republican administration in the prolonged conflict that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine over four years ago.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt described both the Zelensky and Netanyahu meetings as fruitful and optimistic. Trump welcomed Zelensky to honor Senator Graham, highlighting the late senator’s efforts in negotiating sanctions against countries trading with Russia.
In a recent TV interview, Trump praised Senator Graham’s unwavering support for Ukraine and noted his advocacy for dealing with Iran but not offering a similar solution for the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Trump also acknowledged Graham’s assertiveness towards Ukraine, stating that he had a strong stance on the matter.
Before the meeting, Zelensky raised concerns about Russia’s support for Iran during the ongoing conflict, citing evidence of satellite imagery from US bases in the Gulf region being used in Iranian operations. Zelensky emphasized the need for global attention to prevent the escalation of conflict driven by malevolent intentions.
