Weather maps indicate that around 20 counties could experience temperatures exceeding 30C. Tuesday will see a build-up of heat, especially in the south-east of England, with temperatures expected to hit 29C to 30C before peaking the following day.
Forecasts show that by 4pm on Wednesday, areas like Cambridge, Norfolk, Suffolk, and parts of London could experience scorching highs of 33C to 34C. These soaring temperatures are likely to trigger the fourth heatwave of 2026, surpassing the local heat thresholds. Health alerts have been issued for several regions in the UK, warning of significant impacts on health and social care services due to the extreme heat, particularly affecting older individuals and those with underlying health conditions.
While the South East, London, East Midlands, and East of England are under amber heat-health alerts, other regions like the South West, West Midlands, and Yorkshire and the Humber have been issued yellow alerts. These alerts will remain in effect from 9am on Wednesday until 9am on Thursday. The Met Office expects a rapid rise in temperatures, particularly in the southeast, leading to criteria for an official heatwave likely being met by Thursday.
In contrast, the weather in other parts of the UK will be more changeable, with cooler and unsettled conditions arriving sooner from the north and west. Northern areas may experience heavier showers and isolated thunderstorms throughout the week.
