Andy Burnham has assured Ukraine of unwavering UK support, committing to visit Volodymyr Zelensky soon in their inaugural meeting. The Prime Minister emphasized the significance of Mr. Zelensky being the first leader he welcomed since assuming office, reaffirming Britain’s steadfast backing under his leadership.
Speaking alongside Ukrainian and British sailors at a naval base in Portsmouth, Burnham stated, “Our support for Ukraine is resolute. Personally, I stand by you completely, Mr. President. Every commitment made to Ukraine by the UK will be upheld in full.”
He further expressed, “In simple terms, Volodymyr, I want you to know that we stand behind you. You can rely on me and on us. The UK will stand by you for as long as necessary.”
Mr. Zelensky reciprocated, highlighting the strengthened UK-Ukraine relationship and appreciating Burnham’s dedication to the partnership, particularly in defense and security matters.
In a bid to allay concerns in Kyiv regarding the change in UK leadership, Burnham swiftly engaged on the global stage. He reassured Zelensky, “Despite any shifts in British leadership, our support for Ukraine remains steadfast. This sentiment is shared across political parties in the UK. We empathize with the challenges you have faced.”
Following the meeting, Burnham described the interaction as “very warm,” emphasizing a close partnership with Zelensky. He disclosed plans for an imminent visit and a commitment to address the various issues raised by the Ukrainian President during their discussions.
The leaders met over 200 Ukrainian military members participating in Exercise Sea Breeze, a maritime security exercise for future Black Sea missions. Additionally, Burnham announced an agreement allowing Ukraine to manufacture UK-designed signal jammers to counter Russian air defenses. The electronic warfare system, dubbed “Stone Cloak,” is a compact device designed to disrupt drone detection.
