A 12-year-old child has tragically passed away after encountering difficulties in the sea off the shore of a Spanish island.
Emergency services responded to a distress call at La Laja Beach, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Tuesday, July 21, around 1:36 pm. Reports indicated two individuals in distress in the water, prompting the dispatch of medical and rescue units including ambulances, a rescue helicopter, and various support teams.
An 11-year-old child was rescued from the sea by Red Cross beach personnel upon arrival. The minor was swiftly transported to the University Maternal and Child Hospital of the Canary Islands for treatment. The child’s condition remains undisclosed.
A search operation, involving land, sea, and air resources, was initiated to locate the second missing minor. The body was eventually found in the water and transported to the San Cristóbal dock by a Civil Guard vessel.
Authorities from the National Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
La Laja beach, situated in the capital of Gran Canaria, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is one of four beaches in the area. It is primarily frequented by local residents rather than tourists.
Tragically, a mother and her daughter lost their lives at West Mersea beach in Essex this week. Essex Police confirmed that Shelina Rahman, 41, and Samiha, 15, passed away after encountering difficulties in the water on Mersea Island. The incident occurred at West Mersea Island Beach near Seaview Avenue in Essex, where they were trying to save Samiha’s seven-year-old cousin. Despite the efforts of beachgoers, Shelina and Samiha could not be saved and were pronounced dead at the scene, while the young boy is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
