The police chief expressed profound regret today for missed chances prior to the Manchester synagogue terror incident. Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, fatally attacked two worshippers and wounded four others at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue before being shot dead by law enforcement. Authorities had previously confiscated his mobile devices containing evidence of extremist beliefs, but failed to examine them before the attack occurred.
In a related development, Al-Shamie’s associate, Mohammad Bashir, 31, received a life sentence at Manchester Crown Court. Following this outcome, Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson cited reporting restrictions that had hindered the release of further details earlier.
Sir Stephen disclosed that GMP had prior knowledge of Al-Shamie in connection with non-terrorism-related criminal allegations. Despite being on police bail, Al-Shamie’s mobile devices, seized during his arrests, were found to contain significant evidence of his extremist inclinations. Regrettably, this evidence was not assessed before the attack, constituting a missed opportunity according to Sir Stephen.
The police chief expressed deep remorse for the distress caused by the incident and assured continued efforts in combating hatred, extremism, and terrorism. Inquests into the deaths of the attack victims are set to explore all facets of the event. Additionally, the Independent Office for Police Conduct is conducting a review to determine the consequences of the police’s failure to examine Al-Shamie’s device contents.
In a separate incident, Bernard Ayemang, the security guard injured during the attack, shared how his life was forever altered by the events. Suffering from multiple fractures and a suspected brain injury, Ayemang continues to grapple with physical and emotional challenges, expressing ongoing concern for his family’s safety post-attack.
