While the most disadvantaged in the UK struggle to make ends meet, over 100 of the country’s wealthiest individuals are making an extraordinary plea today: urging the government to increase their tax contributions.
In a collective effort, these millionaires have penned a direct message to Andy Burnham, challenging politicians to eliminate excuses that have been used for generations – urging them to impose higher taxes on their wealth.
This call for action does not come from those working multiple shifts to survive, or elderly individuals cutting back on essentials, or families relying on food banks. Instead, it stems from the millionaires themselves – individuals whose riches continue to grow effortlessly, contrasting with the struggles of millions trying to make a living.
Proposing a two percent tax on wealth exceeding £10 million could potentially generate £24 billion, and aligning capital gains tax with income tax could add another £12 billion to the public coffers.
These numbers are not arbitrary figures but represent existing wealth that is accumulating and expanding in the accounts of those who have acknowledged that they possess more than they need.
The combined wealth of these individuals now equals over a fifth of the UK’s total GDP, marking a fivefold increase since 1990. Yet, as these fortunes soar to unimaginable heights, the country’s healthy life expectancy has plummeted, dropping by two years within a decade, now standing at under 61 years.
Despite being the world’s sixth-largest economy, the UK ranks poorly compared to other affluent nations in terms of years lived in good health.
In a country where millionaire and billionaire wealth abounds, people are facing premature deaths. This is not merely a stroke of bad luck but a consequence of long-standing political decisions that necessitate immediate action. The present reality in Britain is glaring: while the median household income is £38,900, a family of four requires £88,000 annually to live comfortably outside London.
Consequently, the average household is left with less than half the necessary income for genuine financial security – not for luxury, but to cover basic expenses, handle unforeseen costs, and approach the future without trepidation.
The extreme levels of individual wealth have detached from human reality, prompting a crucial question: how much wealth does one person truly require?
Individuals like Mr. Lineker and his allies have bravely addressed this query, showcasing more determination than many politicians exhibit in a lifetime.
It is imperative for the Prime Minister to heed this call, implement taxes on vast fortunes, bolster public services, and restore a sense of decency to the UK.
