A fundraising effort has exceeded £100,000 for a three-year-old boy who sustained severe injuries after an alleged incident where he was thrown into a crocodile enclosure. The incident occurred at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo in Cambridgeshire on June 18, and the child, who remains unnamed, has undergone multiple surgeries, including a nerve graft on his left arm.
Medical professionals treating the child faced challenges such as blood vessel damage, broken bones, and significant tissue damage in various parts of his body. The zoo, upon learning of the incident, reported that a child had been thrown into one of their crocodile enclosures. Staff, including the owners and their son, bravely entered the enclosure to rescue the boy.
Following the incident, a 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. However, he was later released on bail as authorities determined he was unfit for questioning due to learning difficulties. An investigation into the man’s care is underway.
A GoFundMe page was set up to aid in the boy’s recovery and has raised over £100,000, with a generous anonymous donation of £2,500. The boy’s family expressed gratitude for the support, noting his progress in communication and smiling again. They remain hopeful for his recovery and are preparing for ongoing rehabilitation.
Addenbrookes Hospital, where the boy is receiving treatment, is under scrutiny after reports that his medical records were accessed by 40 staff members. Cambridge University Hospitals is investigating the matter and has referred itself to the Information Commissioner’s Office to determine the legitimacy of the record access.
The family acknowledged the challenges ahead in supporting their son through his physical and psychological recovery, emphasizing the importance of being by his side every step of the way.
