Ukraine’s top military leader, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, has been dismissed following widespread protests triggered by the removal of the country’s esteemed Defense Minister. The Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, revealed his ousting a week ago due to disagreements with Syrskyi, leading to a wave of street demonstrations that highlighted divisions within the military regarding the approach toward Russia.
In response to the escalating protests, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed support for Fedorov, assuring that he would retain his position within the government. Subsequently, on July 21, Zelensky extended a significant government role to Fedorov to facilitate the cohesion and advancement of the state’s technical aspects, although it remains uncertain whether Fedorov has accepted the offer.
Fedorov, a 35-year-old known for his innovative technological strategies and recruitment techniques, had overseen a period of military triumph during his six-month tenure as Defense Minister. His removal elicited strong public disapproval towards Syrskyi, prompting Zelensky to engage with senior military officials and acknowledge the societal discontent.
Following the events, Syrskyi issued a public apology to Fedorov in a local military publication, expressing regret if he had caused offense and emphasizing his contributions to establishing a dedicated drone unit within the military. In a significant move, Syrskyi will be succeeded by Mykhailo Drapatyi, the current commander of Ukraine’s Joint Forces, renowned for his decisive actions during the 2014 conflict in Mariupol.
Fedorov commended Drapatyi on his new appointment, heralding it as a symbol of fresh hope and determination in the quest for freedom and justice. Additionally, he expressed gratitude towards Syrskyi for his dedication to defending Ukraine.
