A woman was attacked with a knife inside a church in Ireland just before the morning Mass. The incident occurred at Holy Cross Church in Summerhill, Tramore, County Waterford, around 9:45 am. The victim, identified as Mary McNamara in her 50s, sustained a single knife wound and was quickly taken to the hospital for treatment.
Authorities, including specialized armed police from the Armed Support Unit and paramedics, promptly responded to the scene. The victim’s injuries were severe but not life-threatening, according to Gardai.
A local parishioner, Ann O’Connor, who was present during the attack, recounted that the victim, Ms. McNamara, was pursued by her assailant inside the church. O’Connor mentioned that the attacker suddenly lunged at the victim with a knife as she tried to escape.
Describing the victim as a “lovely person” and “very gentle,” O’Connor shared her shock at the traumatic event. Subsequently, a man in his 30s was apprehended at a nearby residence and is currently detained at a Garda Station in Co Waterford. Law enforcement authorities have detained the suspect for up to 24 hours and have secured a knife as part of their investigation.
Gardai confirmed that although the woman sustained serious injuries, her life is not deemed to be at risk at this point.
