Police officers inadvertently recorded themselves making derogatory remarks towards transgender individuals and engaging in discussions about unlawfully stop-searching Black people. The officers stationed at Bethel Street Police Station in Norwich were captured on a camera confiscated from a protester, where they were heard joking about mistreating suspects and engaging in discriminatory practices.
The recorded conversations included an officer mentioning illegally stop-searching Black females and making arrests that stirred controversy. Norfolk Constabulary acknowledged that certain parts of the recordings could damage public trust in law enforcement. However, after investigating, the force stated that there was no evidence of discriminatory conduct in the stop and search incidents.
Following a protest outside the station, animal rights activist Gemma Barnes alleged that she was physically pushed to the ground by a police officer and subsequently arrested. The released recording revealed officers making disparaging comments about protesters and laughing at violent interactions.
Gemma filed a complaint regarding the police’s actions during the protest, leading to an internal investigation by Norfolk Constabulary. Despite three officers receiving disciplinary actions, Gemma criticized the handling of the complaint and decided to take legal action against the police force.
The initial conflict arose during a demonstration by animal rights activists protesting the killing of a pigeon in Norwich town center. The incident, where an elderly man rode his mobility scooter over the bird, sparked outrage among activists, prompting a petition for a reconsideration of the police’s decision not to prosecute the man.
Gemma’s lawyer, John Hagan, condemned the officers’ behavior captured in the recording, highlighting the derogatory language used and the violent treatment of peaceful demonstrators. He criticized the lack of accountability within the police force and vowed to pursue legal actions against Norfolk Constabulary and the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Norfolk Constabulary responded, acknowledging the ongoing investigation into the circulated footage and expressing commitment to uphold public confidence in policing by addressing any misconduct revealed in the recordings. The force emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of behavior among police officers and pledged to take appropriate actions based on the evidence presented.
