A man has been incarcerated following a brutal assault on emergency medical technicians with a claw hammer that was captured on video. The incident occurred when ambulance crews arrived at a residence in Bristol to administer urgent medical assistance but were compelled to escape when James Chandler, aged 49, attempted to attack them with the weapon.
Initially engaging with the medical staff, Chandler suddenly armed himself with a claw hammer and launched a violent assault as the crew tried to depart. Disturbing body camera footage reveals the alarming moment when a hammer swing narrowly missed striking a paramedic’s head.
For their safety, the crew had to quickly flee the scene and trigger an emergency alert. Avon and Somerset Police promptly arrested Chandler, who later admitted to assaulting an emergency worker and brandishing an offensive weapon.
Subsequently, Chandler was sentenced to 16 months in prison at Bristol Crown Court on Thursday (16/7) and will be required to serve at least 40% of his term before being eligible for release. Judge Mr. Justice Picton remarked to him, “You instilled great fear in your victim, understandably. He believed his life was in jeopardy.”
The paramedic who was targeted during the Bristol incident on May 28 this year emphasized the importance of feeling safe while performing one’s duties, particularly in a compassionate profession. He expressed gratitude for the support received from colleagues and law enforcement following the harrowing experience.
Mike Jones, Crime & Violence Reduction Manager at South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, condemned the attack as a severe and potentially fatal assault on ambulance personnel. He stressed that healthcare workers should be able to deliver care without fear of violence or intimidation, noting an alarming trend of escalating violence against healthcare providers.
Emphasizing a zero-tolerance stance on assaults against emergency workers, Jones pledged to collaborate closely with law enforcement to ensure accountability for such offenses. The organization remains dedicated to safeguarding its staff and upholding safety measures while serving communities in the South West region.
