US President Donald Trump has alleged that China was involved in manipulating the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in his disfavor. During a televised address on July 16, Trump announced the immediate declassification and release of sensitive intelligence exposing vulnerabilities in the election system.
According to Trump, this intelligence reveals alarming weaknesses that make the election system susceptible to hacking, exploitation, and foreign meddling to an unprecedented extent. He emphasized that crucial information had been concealed from the public for years.
Trump claimed that China had illegally accessed data on American voters, including personal details such as names, addresses, phone numbers, and political affiliations. He insinuated that this information was utilized for illicit purposes related to voter registration and other clandestine activities.
While voter information is generally considered public record in many states, Trump’s assertions suggested a more sinister exploitation of this data. The White House had hinted at significant revelations in advance of Trump’s address, with the President underscoring the importance of free and fair elections for the integrity of the nation.
Trump, who has persistently alleged voter fraud in the 2020 election leading to his defeat against Joe Biden, reiterated his concerns during this address. Despite Biden securing the presidency with 306 electoral votes and 51.3% of the popular vote, Trump continues to challenge the election results.
Contrary to Trump’s claims, the US intelligence community, in a report released before the end of Trump’s term, found no evidence of foreign interference in the 2020 election. The report, made public by the Biden administration, stated that foreign actors did not attempt to manipulate any technical aspects of the voting process, including voter registration, ballot casting, or result reporting.
The report emphasized the challenges of foreign actors manipulating election processes undetected and highlighted the robust security measures in place to safeguard the integrity of the electoral system.
