Teen Driver Crashes into Elderly Man: “I’ve Killed Someone”

An 18-year-old teenager crashed his newly acquired car into an 84-year-old man and later texted a friend confessing, “I’ve killed someone,” before fleeing the scene. Sonny Horsfall lost control of his black Audi A4 on West Dyke Road in Redcar, North Yorkshire, on April 22, hitting the elderly man who was walking along a footpath at 10:23 pm. The collision left the victim with severe injuries, requiring surgery to rebuild his hip, but he has since recovered well.

Horsfall, a chef at a wellness retreat, had purchased the Audi A4 for £250 from a friend earlier that evening. Following the crash, he ordered a pizza and messaged his friend, admitting that he had lost control and hit someone. Despite driving over 30 miles to Redcar that night and recording Snapchat videos en route, Horsfall expressed remorse in his messages, acknowledging the severity of his actions.

After the incident, Horsfall fled the scene and was arrested the next day in Malton. He pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and uninsured, and failing to stop after the accident. The court sentenced him to three years in jail and a four-year driving ban.

During the court proceedings, Horsfall’s defense barrister highlighted his client’s struggles with PTSD and sleep issues, emphasizing his remorse and the impact of his actions. Despite these factors, the judge condemned Horsfall’s reckless behavior, stressing the gravity of the injuries inflicted on the victim. Detective Constable Rachael Johnson labeled the collision as “shocking and wholly avoidable,” emphasizing the importance of road safety and responsible driving practices to prevent such incidents in the future.
