“UK Introduces Online Safety Measures for Teens”

Teenagers aged 16 and 17 will be subject to new online safety measures that include automatic restrictions on accessing social media and utilizing features designed to be addictive. Liz Kendall announced that certain features like infinite scrolling, overnight curfews from midnight to 6 am, autoplay videos, and personalized content streams will be disabled by default for this age group. However, teenagers can adjust these settings if they choose to do so, prompting discussions on the efficacy of these measures.

The aim of these measures is to provide greater online protection for older teenagers while still allowing them control over their settings. Additionally, concerns about potential risks for young people when the social media ban for under 16s is lifted on their 16th birthday are being addressed. The government plans to collaborate with regulators to tackle platforms that offer harmful mental health advice, including considering the prohibition of chatbots that pose risks to children.

New guidelines on safe AI usage for children, parents, and guardians will soon be released on the Kids Online Safety Hub. Furthermore, the UK is set to become the first country to ban chatbots providing sexualized content to individuals under 18. Feedback from over 300 teenagers and parents involved in a government pilot program indicated that overnight curfews had positive effects on sleep and concentration.

Andy Burrows, CEO of the Molly Rose Foundation, expressed support for the measures targeting older teens but noted that a more comprehensive approach to children’s online safety is needed. The transition of responsibilities from Keir Starmer to Andy Burnham comes with the expectation for swift and decisive actions to create a safer online environment for children and families.

Liz Kendall emphasized the importance of protecting young people from harmful online features that could impact their well-being as they navigate greater independence at 16. These measures are intended to help teenagers prioritize sleep, academic performance, and quality time with loved ones, essential for their overall well-being. The goal is to empower young people to benefit from technology while equipping them with the tools to thrive in the online world.
