An elderly man from California was thrown through the air by a massive bison at Yellowstone National Park, sustaining severe injuries, including a fractured hip. Despite witnesses asserting that the man had not violated any safety protocols, the 80-year-old was left in critical condition after the 907kg animal attacked him at the Bridge Bay Campground.
The man and his grandson had been on an evening walk when they noticed the bison at a safe distance away. Although they were well beyond the park’s required safety zone, they paused to take photos. However, as the park entered bison rutting season, known for heightened aggression in bulls, the situation quickly escalated.
The bison, already agitated and displaying aggressive behavior, had previously charged at a group of children. Subsequently, the animal wandered through the campsite, prompting the man and his grandson to retreat. Unfortunately, a passing truck seemed to provoke the bison, leading it to target the grandfather and grandson.
In a disturbing incident captured on video, the bison gored the man, launching him several feet into the air before he landed forcefully on the ground. With the man in a vulnerable position, a witness bravely intervened, distracting the bison and preventing further harm.
Following the attack, bystanders provided immediate assistance to the injured man before he was taken to a hospital for treatment. Despite receiving medical attention, his condition remains serious. The National Park Service has initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the bison attack.
