A recent analysis by experts indicates that over 2,700 individuals have succumbed to the recent heatwaves. The study, conducted by researchers from Imperial College London, the Met Office, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), estimates that there were approximately 2,700 excess deaths related to heat during the heatwaves in May and June.
The research findings emphasize the significant role of climate change in the increased mortality rate. It was revealed that 42% of the fatalities were attributed to the additional heat generated by human activities, primarily the combustion of fossil fuels. The study, which was peer-reviewed, focused on the period surrounding the unprecedented heatwaves in May and June, where temperatures soared to 35.1°C and 37°C respectively.
Through a comprehensive analysis of weather data, climate models, and heat-related mortality research, experts estimated that around 550 individuals perished due to heat-related causes during the nine days of the May heatwave, while approximately 2,200 deaths occurred during the 11 days of the June heatwave in England and Wales. Furthermore, it was discovered that 59% of the May deaths and 38% of the June deaths were directly linked to the heat escalation induced by climate change.
The researchers cautioned that maximum daytime temperatures are now 3°C-4°C hotter than they would be without the influence of climate change, which heightens the risk of various heat-related health complications. These risks include heat exhaustion, heat stroke, cardiovascular strain, exacerbation of chronic illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes, as well as negative impacts on mental health, violence, and drowning incidents.
Dr. Mark McCarthy from the Met Office described the record-breaking heatwaves as extraordinary occurrences, with daytime temperatures surpassing the average by 15°C in May across England and Wales, while also setting new nighttime temperature records. The June heatwave, characterized by extreme humidity and heat, further accentuated the severity of the situation.
The analysis underscores the urgent need to adapt to the changing climate reality and intensify global efforts to achieve net zero emissions. The Green Party of England and Wales leader, Zack Polanski, emphasized the accountability of policymakers in addressing the climate crisis to prevent future fatalities. Additionally, the London Ambulance Service reported a surge in life-threatening emergencies during the June heatwave, urging the public to take precautions such as staying hydrated and avoiding strenuous activities during peak heat hours to ensure safety.
