President Donald Trump is advocating for the construction of permanent security fencing around the White House in response to a reported Iranian threat of assassination.
The administration of the US leader has disclosed intentions to replace temporary barricades surrounding Lafayette Square with a lasting fence ranging between eight and nine feet tall, accompanied by extra security measures in the vicinity of the presidential residence.
This decision follows statements from Trump claiming that Israel had provided intelligence indicating a plot by Iran to eliminate him, amid escalating tensions between the two countries.
As per The Washington Post, the proposed plans would grant security authorities the ability to close off sections of Pennsylvania Avenue and restrict pedestrian access surrounding the White House in the event of a perceived threat.
Officials assert that the outlined measures aim to enhance long-term security while preserving public entry to the historic area. The proposals are set to be reviewed by the US Commission of Fine Arts in the upcoming week.
Nevertheless, the plans have generated opposition from politicians and advocacy groups who express concerns about potential limitations on public access and the right to protest.
Eleanor Holmes Norton, the non-voting congressional representative for Washington DC, declared her intent to introduce legislation aimed at obstructing the proposed fencing.
She emphasized, “Introducing more fencing around the president’s park would convey an inappropriate message to the nation and the global community by further shifting our democracy from an inclusive model centered on the people to an exclusive one driven by fear of its own citizens.”
Concerns have also been raised by activists that the proposed measures could undermine protests in the vicinity of the White House.
According to The Washington Post, discussions regarding the permanent fencing of Lafayette Square were initiated during Trump’s initial term in response to demonstrations following the death of George Floyd in 2020, which led to Trump briefly seeking refuge in the White House bunker as a precautionary measure.
The latest proposals also involve renovating portions of Lafayette Square after officials cautioned that existing paving stones could be dismantled and utilized as projectiles during instances of civil unrest.
