A man, 26, has been apprehended on suspicion of the murder of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, aged 78. Widdecombe was discovered in her Dartmoor bungalow with severe injuries, including a serious head wound. While the cause of death remains unconfirmed by the authorities, police have stated that the murder does not appear to be politically motivated. The suspect, a white British national, was taken into custody in Newton Abbott, approximately eight miles from the crime scene.
Law enforcement officials are investigating whether any items were taken during the incident, if there was a forced entry, or if a weapon was used. The murder inquiry was launched by Devon and Cornwall Police on Friday afternoon. Detective Chief Inspector Ilona Rosson mentioned that the investigation is progressing rapidly.
Widdecombe, who resided alone, was pronounced dead at her home in Haytor Vale within Dartmoor National Park. Authorities are piecing together her movements leading up to her death, including reviewing CCTV footage and monitoring ANPR cameras for any relevant vehicle movements.
Widdecombe, a retired MP since 2001, had been residing in her Devon home, Widdecombe’s Rest, since 2008. She had previously expressed a lack of fear regarding potential threats due to her easily locatable residence. Her death has elicited condolences from various political figures and public figures, highlighting her dedication to public service.
