Donald Trump is facing accusations of hypocrisy following the White House’s criticism of Keir Starmer for allegedly jeopardizing lives by objecting to the kick-off time of England’s recent World Cup match. Just a day prior, Trump himself defied weather warnings to ensure a large audience for his Fourth of July speech.
Concerns arose about changing the match time against Mexico due to an impending thunderstorm that could have led to cancellation if lightning struck nearby. Ultimately, the game began an hour late due to the storm.
Andrew Giuliani, son of former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani and head of the White House World Cup task force, addressed claims that Trump influenced FIFA to reverse the ban on Team USA’s Folarin Balogun before their match against Belgium.
Giuliani cited Starmer’s alleged interference in not allowing the rescheduling of the Mexico-England match as a more critical decision. He referenced an incident where three Mexicans died from asphyxiation during celebrations after a previous match, unrelated to weather concerns.
Additionally, Trump disclosed that he intervened to prevent the cancellation of his Fourth of July speech on the National Mall, which was initially called off due to lightning. Despite lightning strikes during the subsequent fireworks display, no casualties were reported, but twelve individuals required hospitalization due to extreme heat during the US capital’s heatwave.
Lib Dem culture spokesperson Anna Sabine criticized the White House for condemning Starmer’s actions while ignoring Trump’s similar intervention just a day earlier to safeguard his Fourth of July event. Sabine labeled this behavior as hypocritical.
