“Parents warned: Squishy toys in hot cars can explode”

Parents are advised to ensure that children do not leave squishy toys in hot cars to prevent them from exploding and causing burns. These toys, filled with a liquid gel, have made headlines due to incidents where they have exploded when microwaved, resulting in injuries to children.

Recent reports have emerged of children getting hurt as the toys burst after being left in cars on hot days. In West Virginia, a 13-year-old girl was hospitalized after a squishy toy in a car exploded, splashing her with hot liquid that stuck to her skin and required medical treatment.

Similar incidents occurred in New Mexico, highlighting the dangers of these toys when exposed to heat. The gel in the toys can be difficult to remove from the skin and may cause significant harm if not treated properly.

Experts caution that the inside of a parked car can quickly reach high temperatures, causing gel-filled toys to soften and burst. Children should be aware of these risks and avoid holding such toys close to their faces.

If a toy bursts, it is important to cool the affected area with water and seek immediate medical attention. The damage caused by these toys can extend beyond injuries, as the gel can damage car interiors, leading to costly repairs.

Apart from squishy toys, other items like aerosols, batteries, medicines, and plastic water bottles can also be affected by extreme heat. It is recommended to check vehicles during hot weather to prevent injuries and expensive damages.

The UK is bracing for soaring temperatures in the upcoming days, with the Met Office forecasting temperatures exceeding 30C nationwide. Trading Standards have issued warnings against heating squishy toys in microwaves, emphasizing the risks associated with this practice.
