An environmental activist and influencer named Manuel Alejandro Moreno Serna, known as Alex Serna, was recently discovered deceased in Mexico following reports of threatening messages warning him to “back off”. Serna went missing on June 20, the same day he uploaded a video alleging misconduct by a fruit company. Two days later, a body, showing signs of torture, was found inside a blue drum in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero.
The deceased was identified as Mr. Serna from Zihuatanejo. The Human Rights Commission of the State of Guerrero (CDHEG) confirmed his death, inciting widespread local outrage. The body was found on the side of the Zihuatanejo-Acapulco federal highway in Petatlán on June 22 and officially identified days later by his family.
CDHEG has demanded a thorough investigation into the incident. Serna was renowned in the Costa Grande region for his advocacy against environmental damage, territorial disputes, and potential corruption. He had exposed a foreign mango company for unauthorized water extraction in his state just before his disappearance, alleging a lack of official approval.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the crime, and no suspects have been apprehended. Nevertheless, prior to his demise, Serna had received menacing threats via social media, including messages like “cut the crap” and “we’ve got you in our sights, you better back off.” The community, particularly activists and journalists, has rallied in support, planning demonstrations against disappearances and silencing.
In light of the tragedy, a friend of Serna took to social media, urging authorities to intervene promptly, highlighting a trend of media personnel being abducted in Guerrero. The friend emphasized the need for attention to such incidents and protection of truth-seeking journalists.
