A novel brain rehabilitation program for Long Covid has been designed by British researchers. This program has proven to be effective in reducing symptoms like brain fog and aiding patients in resuming work and hobbies. Over a ten-week period, participants engaged in one-hour individual video sessions with a therapist to learn simple techniques that greatly improved their condition.
Conducted by University College London, a study involving 78 Long Covid patients demonstrated the feasibility of cognitive rehabilitation for Long Covid. This development brings hope to numerous families grappling with the long-term effects of Covid-19 on their loved ones.
Dr. Martina Vanova, the lead author, highlighted that cognitive issues are prevalent among individuals with Long Covid, affecting their daily activities and overall quality of life. The program, supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, focused on enhancing working memory and concentration, addressing common challenges faced by Long Covid patients.
Emma Sullivan, a study participant from Surrey who was diagnosed with Long Covid after contracting the virus in 2021, expressed how the program positively impacted her mental and cognitive abilities. By implementing specific strategies taught during the trial, she was able to regain focus, manage tasks effectively, and improve her overall quality of life.
The successful techniques employed in the program included setting timed work intervals, minimizing distractions, and establishing routines to enhance memory and task management. The results, published in JAMA Network Open, revealed that participants undergoing cognitive rehabilitation experienced significant improvements compared to those receiving standard care.
Professor Dennis Chan, the chief investigator, emphasized the importance of addressing Long Covid-related cognitive challenges and the effectiveness of personalized cognitive rehabilitation in restoring normal function. The study’s findings highlighted the substantial and sustained benefits of cognitive rehab for individuals with Long Covid symptoms, paving the way for its widespread adoption as a treatment option.
