Nigel Farage Faces Backlash Over £270,000 Gold Role

Nigel Farage is facing strong criticism for his substantial external earnings, with calls from lawmakers to prohibit second jobs. The leader of Reform UK reportedly received £270,000 for a brief 12-hour gold bullion sales role, adding to over £2 million in earnings and gifts disclosed since his tenure as an MP, in addition to his parliamentary salary of £98,599.

During a parliamentary discussion, politicians from various parties expressed astonishment at the permissibility of such practices and urged the government to restrict secondary employment, except in exceptional cases. Despite being informed by multiple members that he would be mentioned, Mr. Farage did not attend the debate. He has declared income from 16 external sources since his election in July 2024, totaling 140 days of paid work.

Labour’s Richard Burgon, advocating for a ban on second jobs, emphasized that being an MP is a privileged and well-compensated position that demands full-time dedication to constituents. Criticism was also directed at the disparity between the earnings of MPs and the average citizen, with concerns raised about the integrity of the democratic process when public representatives prioritize personal gain.

Recent revelations showed that Mr. Farage earned £18,402 for approximately six hours of presenting on GB News, raising further scrutiny over the extent of his external commitments. The debate highlighted the need for stricter regulations on MPs’ outside work, with discussions ongoing on potential changes to current rules.

The Green Party’s Dr. Ellie Chowns condemned the practice of holding multiple second jobs as incompatible with the responsibilities of an MP, citing the significant earnings accrued by Mr. Farage. The issue of financial interests and undeclared income has come under investigation, raising questions about adherence to parliamentary standards.

The Commons Committee on Standards is actively reviewing guidelines concerning MPs’ external earnings, reflecting growing concerns over potential conflicts of interest. Requests for comments from Reform UK on the matter remain unanswered.
