“Scottish Man Missing, Feared Dead in Ukraine Conflict”

A man from Scotland, Stefan Sivers, who was involved in the conflict against Russia in Ukraine, has gone missing and is believed to have passed away in the Kharkiv region. Sivers, aged 35 and hailing from Aberdeen, reportedly traveled to Ukraine in December of last year after expressing support for the country on social media since 2022.

The UK’s Foreign Office has confirmed his disappearance, with an FCDO Spokesperson stating that they are assisting the family of the British national missing in Ukraine and maintaining communication with local authorities. The Foreign Office strongly advises against travel to Ukraine and surrounding areas, emphasizing the limited capacity of the British government to aid British citizens in Ukraine.

Following the initiation of conflict by Putin’s invading forces in February 2022, Sivers’ Facebook profile displayed two selfies of him posing with a graphic featuring the Ukrainian flag, according to reports from the Daily Record. In one of his posts, he questioned the relevance of trench warfare in modern times.

Although Sivers was known to have worked in restaurants, there is no indication that he had a military background, unlike many mercenaries involved in the conflict in Ukraine. The FCDO website highlights the risks faced by British nationals participating in the conflict, noting that individuals joining the International Legion or Ukraine Armed Forces since May 18, 2024, are required to serve a minimum of six months without the option to leave Ukraine during this period.

Furthermore, the website emphasizes the limited ability of the British government to provide support under such circumstances, including restrictions on facilitating departure from Ukraine, medical repatriation, or termination of military contracts.
