“RSPCA Urges Proper Storage of Goal Netting to Save Wildlife”

The RSPCA is advising individuals with gardens to conduct a final check before bedtime, as this simple action could potentially save lives. With the FIFA World Cup 2026 motivating soccer enthusiasts to engage in outdoor activities and aim for goals, the animal welfare organization is emphasizing the importance of properly storing goal netting post-use. Concerns have arisen due to several incidents where wildlife got ensnared in unattended football nets, highlighting the fact that wild animals can easily panic when trapped.

This reminder coincides with the ongoing Summer of Kindness initiative by the charity. Recently, RSPCA Animal Rescue Officers Joanna Thorpe and Emma Baker were summoned to a garden in Grundisburgh, Suffolk, where they found a deer entangled in football netting. After freeing the distressed deer from the net and evaluating its condition, the officers successfully released it back into its natural habitat.

ARO Joanna emphasized the significance of prompt action in such situations, citing the potential for severe injuries or even fatalities among trapped wild animals due to panic and struggle. The RSPCA has responded to various similar incidents since the World Cup began, including the rescue of a young fox trapped in football goal netting in north London.

ARO Nicola Thomas recounted the rescue where the fox, entangled in the mesh, required careful release and subsequent evaluation for potential injuries. Thanks to the care provided by wildlife experts at Essex Wildlife Hospital, the fox made a full recovery and was safely reintroduced into the wild.

Nicola highlighted the need for vigilance in safeguarding wildlife from hazards like loose netting, which can endanger curious animals like young foxes. She urged individuals using football goals to diligently store nets and equipment after use to prevent such incidents and potentially save animal lives.
