A man, identified as Lewis Hawkes, aged 36, has been accused of carrying out assaults targeting Muslims in Edinburgh. The charges against him include attempted murders, assault and robbery, breach of peace, and culpable and reckless conduct, all with alleged terrorist connections, according to the Crown Office.
The incidents, suspected to be anti-Muslim in nature, occurred on Friday, leaving five men injured – two aged 22, and others aged 24, 27, and 39. Two victims were stabbed multiple times after prayers at Broomhouse Mosque, while the remaining three were attacked on Leith Walk.
During a private hearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Hawkes did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody pending another court appearance within eight days.
Multiple attacks were reported across Edinburgh on the same evening. Two 22-year-old men were stabbed at Sighthill Park after leaving a mosque prayer session. Subsequently, a taxi was vandalized at a Shell garage, and a man was seen causing damage at a BP garage before brandishing weapons on Leith Walk.
The suspect was captured on CCTV engaged in various violent acts, including chasing individuals and damaging property. Police Scotland has engaged with numerous multi-faith organizations in Edinburgh to address concerns within the community.
Superintendent Neil Wilson emphasized the importance of supporting all communities to ensure a safe environment free from discrimination or intimidation. Collaboration and inclusivity are encouraged to prevent any individual or group from feeling marginalized.
