A mother expressed her shock after her one-year-old son was fatally shot by police in response to a suspected shoplifting incident. Vellesiya Wiley detailed her attempt to alert officers that her son, Kohen, was inside the vehicle just before law enforcement discharged their weapons in Senatobia, Mississippi. The tragic event occurred as Vellesiya, Kohen, and a friend were leaving Walmart and were approached by officers regarding alleged theft of diapers.
According to Vellesiya, as her friend tried to reverse the car, officers approached with guns drawn. Despite her efforts to show her baby, Kohen, to the officers, the situation escalated quickly, resulting in multiple shots being fired. Tragically, Kohen was fatally wounded, while Vellesiya’s friend sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to a hospital.
Describing Kohen as a joyful baby whose life was cut short, his grandfather, Carlos Haynes, lamented the premature end to his grandson’s life. Vellesiya maintained her innocence and asserted that security footage from the store would prove her friend’s innocence in the alleged theft.
Community advocate Marquell Bridges emphasized that Vellesiya was not involved in any criminal activity and was simply playing with her child before the tragic events unfolded. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump condemned the use of force against an innocent child and vowed to seek justice for baby Kohen.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation reported that officers encountered individuals fleeing the store, leading to a confrontation where the vehicle allegedly drove towards the police.
