A frightening gas explosion rocked a village in Malaga, causing injuries to several individuals, including two children. The incident occurred at the Mesón Morisco restaurant, resulting in the collapse of the building’s storeroom and an adjacent residence.
Approximately 50 diners were present inside the establishment when the explosion occurred, prompting concerns of a potential bomb blast due to the building being abruptly shaken. Debris scattered across the Sayalonga village in the Axarquía area around 8 pm on June 16.
Emergency services reported that eight people, including two children, sustained minor injuries that did not necessitate hospitalization. The severely damaged property has been partially cordoned off by the Guardia Civil, the TEDAX bomb disposal unit, and firefighters for further investigation into the explosion’s cause.
Local residents recounted their experiences during the blast, with one individual mistaking the explosion for an earthquake. The incident left significant structural damage, with the building’s second floor and a neighboring flat severely impacted. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, and the affected premises will remain closed until deemed safe for operation.
Mesón Morisco, a highly-rated establishment, assured its commitment to reopening stronger following the incident. Authorities are continuing to probe the situation, focusing on a possible gas leak as the source of the explosion. Efforts to secure the area and ensure no individuals were trapped under debris were promptly conducted by fire crews.
