Relocating to another country requires a significant commitment and often brings unexpected financial challenges. A British expat who moved to Canada shared her experience of facing a notable expense that caught her off guard.
Louise Ware-Armstrong, a lifestyle and travel vlogger who transitioned from the UK to Niagara Falls in Ontario, recently posted a TikTok video detailing her monthly expenses in Canada. While her rent and other living costs were within her expectations, she highlighted one particular cost that stood out as notably higher than what she was used to back in the UK.
In the video, which garnered over 11,000 likes, Louise pointed out that one of the most expensive bills in Canada is the phone plan. She emphasized the challenge of finding an affordable phone plan in the country.
Detailing her expenses, Louise mentioned that her combined monthly costs for mobile phone, home internet, and TV services totaled around 400 Canadian dollars (£215). She expressed disbelief at the high costs, stating, “For my phone, internet, and TV package, the total comes to around $400 a month, which is simply outrageous.”
She further explained that upon her initial move to Canada, she found it challenging to secure a phone plan for less than $60 a month without the inclusion of a phone. This revelation sparked a conversation among viewers who shared similar concerns about the high cost of living in Canada.
According to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), mobile prices in Canada have seen a decline in recent years, but the country still ranks among the more expensive markets globally for wireless services.
Data from price comparison platform WhistleOut indicates that the average Canadian mobile phone bill is approximately CA$64 (£34) per month, significantly higher than in the UK. Industry analyses consistently position Canada as one of the pricier countries for mobile phone services, attributing this trend to a less competitive market and higher infrastructure expenses.
The content creator shared the breakdown of her monthly expenses post-relocation from the UK to Niagara Falls. While detailing her living costs, she revealed that she pays 1,650 Canadian dollars in rent for a two-bedroom residence, in addition to separate utility expenses for electricity, gas, and water.
However, it was the cost of phone and internet services that particularly caught her attention, describing it as one of the major financial surprises she encountered upon moving abroad.
