“Raducanu Falls to Vekic in Queens Final”

Emma Raducanu faced defeat against Donna Vekic in the championship final at Queens despite a strong effort in the second set. The British player had aimed for a significant victory in front of her home fans but struggled as her opponent from Croatia dominated the first set 6-0. The following set was more closely contested, ending with Vekic securing the win in a tiebreak.

Ranked 42nd globally, Raducanu, the top British player, has not claimed a title since her historic triumph at the US Open in 2021. Vekic, the champion, had previously defeated another British player, Katie Boulter, in the semifinals of the tournament.

Raducanu had a flawless run to the final without dropping a set, overcoming opponents like Iva Jovic, Kamilla Rakhimova, and Sorana Cirstea. Despite the loss, Raducanu remained positive, showcasing her skills in the second set as she prepares for Wimbledon in a few weeks.

Vekic expressed her satisfaction with the victory but admitted to being wary of a potential comeback from Raducanu after her dominant performance in the first set. She praised Raducanu’s resilience and the quality of tennis displayed in the match.

Having reached the fourth round at Wimbledon twice, Raducanu’s success at the Grand Slam tournaments is highlighted by her remarkable achievement at the US Open. Despite a loss to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka last year, Raducanu continues to demonstrate her talent on the global stage.
