A woman, Maja Klaczynska, fell seriously ill due to black mold in her newly constructed home, prompting concerns from doctors that she might have cancer. The 33-year-old, a resident of Silvertown, East London, was compelled to vacate her residence as the living conditions became unbearable. After experiencing severe headaches, joint pain, a persistent cough, and fever, medical professionals conducted CT and PET scans suspecting leukemia or lymphoma, but thankfully, those conditions were ruled out.
Having moved into her dream home in July 2022 after relocating from Poland to study in the UK at the age of 18, Maja found her belongings covered in mold and had to leave with only the clothes on her back. Despite multiple inspections indicating no significant issues with the property, Maja persisted in her belief that mold was the root cause of her deteriorating health.
Taking legal action against the landlord through Hodge Jones & Allen, Maja accused Peabody Trust officials and a builder of dismissing her mold-related concerns. She discovered extensive black mold in the bathroom, kitchen, and walls with the help of her own experts. Subsequently, she was relocated to temporary accommodations before finally being allowed to move back in with her partner after the necessary repairs were completed in January.
Expressing her distress over losing everything and being forced out of her home, Maja highlighted the ordeal she endured throughout the process. Peabody issued an apology for the situation and ensured that alternative accommodation was provided during the repair period. Bahareh Amani, representing Maja, emphasized the need for compensation and justice for her client, praising her resilience in the face of adversity.
