Judge Removed for Sending Sexualized Image to Staff

A judge has been removed from his position after allegations surfaced that he sent a “highly sexualized image” to court staff. The judge, Andrew Simpson, who was previously a solicitor and later became a district judge, faced complaints from colleagues that led to an investigation resulting in a finding of gross misconduct due to his misuse of authority.

Accusations against Andrew include engaging in inappropriate conduct by contacting staff through social media and text messages for non-work-related matters, as well as sharing photos from social gatherings outside of work, including the alleged sexualized image. The investigation started when a complaint was lodged against the judge for behaving inappropriately towards staff members.

During the inquiry, Andrew admitted to some of the allegations but claimed he had no improper intentions, stating that he was trying to support and uplift staff during challenging times. Despite his assertions of being consistently polite and friendly, the investigation office deemed certain behaviors as inappropriate, though they acknowledged that his intentions were not ill-meant but rather significantly misguided.

The panel initially recommended a reprimand, considering Andrew’s positive intentions, expressions of regret, and assurances of improved conduct. However, the final decision to dismiss him came from Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill and Lord Chancellor David Lammy, who cited repeated inappropriate behavior, abuse of authority, distress caused to staff, and harm to the judiciary’s reputation as reasons for termination.

In a statement, the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office highlighted that Andrew’s actions amounted to gross misconduct, demonstrating a severe breach of integrity and a failure to meet judicial standards. The decision-makers found his conduct unacceptable, leading to the conclusion that his removal from the judicial office was the appropriate response given the seriousness of the situation and its impact on staff and the judiciary’s reputation.
