Replicas of the iconic football jersey donned by Paul Gascoigne and the England squad during the Italia ’90 tournament are currently the best-selling vintage football shirts, surpassing the World Cup designs. The plain white shirt with dark navy accents and the Three Lions emblem became famous when Gazza shed tears of frustration after receiving a yellow card in a crucial semi-final match against West Germany.
Despite England’s eventual exit from the tournament via a penalty shootout, Gazza’s emotional moment remains etched in the nation’s memory over three decades later. Sports Direct, in collaboration with heritage shirt manufacturer Score Draw, announced that the 1990 design is now their top-selling retro football jersey.
In anticipation of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Sports Direct is launching a campaign titled ‘When Football Was Football,’ hosted by comedian Steve Bracknall, the creator of the fictional football club Royal Oak FC. Retail experts note a surge in demand for retro England and Scotland football shirts, featuring classic styles from past international competitions, with the retro market doubling in size since the 2022 World Cup.
Among the popular items are England’s Euro ’96 shirt worn by Gareth Southgate, Scotland’s 1996 kit sported by players like Gary McAllister and Colin Hendry, and the 2004 England jersey worn by David Beckham and his team. Steve Bracknall expressed his enthusiasm for the World Cup, highlighting its ability to unite fans of all ages and backgrounds through shared excitement and pride in the sport.
A spokesperson from Sports Direct emphasized that ‘When Football Was Football’ celebrates the traditions, personalities, and jerseys that have endeared fans to the game, bridging nostalgia with a new generation. England players’ enthusiasm for the upcoming World Cup was evident as reports surfaced of them purchasing up to 1,000 tickets for friends and family at each game. Chief Constable Mark Roberts discussed policing strategies for the tournament, revealing the substantial ticket uptake by the players for the group matches.
