The construction team has been busy at Epsom Racecourse preparing a new “mini-city” ahead of the upcoming Derby this Saturday. Due to strict regulations set by an act of Parliament, race organizers are only allowed to begin erecting essential structures 21 days before the event. Mirror Online had an exclusive look behind the scenes to witness the preparations for the Betfred Derby.
The Jockey Club has made a significant investment of an additional £6 million this year for the event. During the visit, hospitality units were rapidly set up on one side of the track, while sprinklers on the other side were ensuring the pristine condition of the iconic winning enclosure where legendary horses like Shergar, Nijinsky, Sir Ivor, and Galileo have graced.
General manager Jim Allen stated that they have a five-year plan in place to revitalize the Derby Festival, starting with the current investment to enhance various aspects, including prize money and the overall experience for attendees. A partnership deal with O Beach Ibiza has also been secured to introduce a vibrant atmosphere to the event, targeting a younger audience.
As part of the revitalization project, new enhancements are being introduced this year, including covered seating along the final furlong on ‘The Hill’ to provide spectators with an elevated view of the races. Allen emphasized the importance of continuously evolving and improving to offer the best experience possible for attendees over the two-day festival.
The Derby holds a special place as an iconic British event, with trainers, owners, and jockeys all aspiring to win this prestigious race. The team is dedicated to providing an unforgettable experience for racegoers that aligns with the Derby’s status as a world-class event. Allen highlighted the unique atmosphere of Derby Day, where attendees can enjoy the races in various enclosures, creating a one-of-a-kind experience unlike any other sporting event.
