A teenager on a United Airlines flight to Spain caused a security scare by labeling a Fitbit device as a ‘bomb,’ leading to the plane making an emergency U-turn mid-flight. The incident occurred during the transatlantic journey from New Jersey to Mallorca when the 16-year-old’s fitness tracker raised security concerns among passengers and crew.
Upon the detection of the labeled device, an urgent announcement was made over the plane’s PA system instructing all passengers to disable their Bluetooth devices immediately. Passengers reported that repeated announcements were made, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation and the need to comply with the directive from United’s corporate headquarters in Chicago.
Despite the warnings, two devices remained active, including the Fitbit device named ‘bomb’ by the teenager. The refusal to turn off the device as a prank led the pilot to divert the flight back to New York, where law enforcement agencies awaited its arrival.
This incident highlights the importance of adhering to aviation safety protocols and the potential consequences of making jokes or false claims that jeopardize flight security.
