The United States has initiated attacks on Iran, targeting the country’s missile launch sites and mine-laying boats, despite indications that a peace agreement was nearing completion.
According to the US military, they conducted defensive strikes on Monday in southern Iran. Captain Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for US Central Command, stated that the strikes were carried out to safeguard their troops from threats posed by Iranian forces, emphasizing that they were exercising restraint during the current ceasefire.
This development follows recent remarks by President Trump suggesting progress in negotiations for a peace deal with Iran after consultations with Gulf allies, Israel, and a mediator from Pakistan, potentially signaling an end to the ongoing conflict.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran reported the downing of a US drone and firing at a fighter jet that had entered Iranian airspace, without specifying the timing of these incidents.
In response, the US military targeted boats trying to place mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that has been largely closed since the conflict began, as well as missile sites utilized by Iran.
Captain Hawkins disclosed that the US struck an area near the port city of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran, home to a military port and a dual-use airport situated on the Strait. Washington has accused Tehran of planting mines near the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has condemned the US strikes as a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement, warning that it will retaliate against any acts of aggression. The Iranian foreign ministry criticized the US for breaching the ceasefire in Hormozgan province and affirmed Iran’s commitment to defending its sovereignty.
A ceasefire brokered by Pakistan has been in effect since April 8, coinciding with reports of progressing negotiations. While Iran has suggested that the ceasefire was compromised, the US appears to have a different perspective.
Regarding the ceasefire, Captain Hawkins reiterated the US commitment to defending their forces while exercising restraint. China, a key ally of Iran, has urged both nations to uphold their obligations under the ceasefire agreement and resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue.
In conclusion, tensions persist between the US and Iran despite ongoing efforts to reach a peaceful resolution through diplomatic channels.
