“10-Year-Old ‘Water Baby’ Saves Himself with Lifeguard Skills”

A young boy named Walter Keeler, also known as a “water baby,” showcased his swimming skills by employing the “float to live” technique to save himself after being inadvertently left behind by a leisure boat while snorkeling in Turkey. Walter, a nine-year-old with rookie lifeguard training, managed to stay safe in the choppy waters as his parents helplessly watched the boat move away, abandoning him and other swimmers.

Despite the distressing situation, Walter remained calm and relied on his lifeguard lessons acquired at Stoke Mandeville Stadium since October 2020. He demonstrated his proficiency in stroke techniques and essential water safety skills taught through the RLSS UK’s Rookie Lifeguard program, which he attends twice a week.

Now aged ten, Walter recounted his harrowing experience from last August, emphasizing the importance of water safety and supporting the Save Lives for Sam campaign. He highlighted how he recalled his training during the incident, calmly floating on his back to conserve energy and avoid panic.

Walter’s parents, Charles and Elaine, shared their anxious moments during the ordeal, praising their son’s composure and quick thinking. Despite the initial panic, they were relieved to see Walter safely back on the boat, where he was greeted with a warm hug from his mother.

Acknowledging the significance of water safety education, the family emphasized the vital role of teaching children essential swimming and self-rescue skills. They credited Walter’s ability to stay safe in a potentially dangerous situation to his years of swimming lessons and drowning prevention training.

The incident underscored the importance of learning lifesaving techniques, such as floating, which is a fundamental aspect of the Water Safety Code. Walter’s bravery and presence of mind in the face of adversity showcased the effectiveness of the Rookie Lifeguard program in equipping young swimmers with confidence and emergency response skills.

Ashley Jones, the RLSS UK Head of Water Safety and Education, commended Walter’s calm response in challenging sea conditions, emphasizing the necessity for individuals, especially young swimmers, to learn not only how to swim but also how to stay safe in the water. The Rookie Lifeguard program offers a comprehensive approach to water safety, empowering participants to respond effectively to emergencies and ensure their well-being in aquatic environments.

As the family advocates for water safety awareness, they encourage everyone to practice floating as a vital self-rescue skill before engaging in water activities. By promoting proactive safety measures and emphasizing the importance of water competency, they aim to prevent similar incidents and ensure the well-being of swimmers of all ages.
