During the Trooping the Colour event today, a notable group of senior working members of the Royal Family stood on the Palace balcony, while some were missing from their usual spot to witness the RAF flypast.
King Charles and Queen Camilla were prominent figures at the event, accompanied by Prince William, Princess Kate, and their children George, Charlotte, and Louis. Other attendees included Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Sophie – the Duchess of Edinburgh, Duchess of Gloucester, Vice-Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, and the Duke of Kent.
Among those absent from the balcony were non-working royals Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, who have also faced scrutiny over their rental of royal London apartments as revealed by the National Audit Office.
Notably missing from the gathering were Zara and Mike Tindall, as well as James – the Earl of Wessex, Lady Louise Windsor, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle were not part of the Trooping the Colour event. Andrew, who lost his titles and faced legal issues, last attended the event in 2019, the same year Harry and Meghan participated before stepping back from their royal duties.
In a departure from past traditions, the Queen chose to invite only working royal family members to the balcony for the 2022 Trooping the Colour event, coinciding with the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Notably, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, a non-working royal married to Princess Anne, received a special invitation.
Buckingham Palace explained that the decision to include only royals actively engaged in official duties was made after careful consideration. However, an exception was made for Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, highlighting his close involvement in Princess Anne’s royal engagements.
