WHAM! Documentary Reveals Journey Behind China Tour

A captivating new 90-minute documentary titled WHAM! 10 Days in China is set to hit theaters next month, offering never-before-seen footage of the band’s journey behind the iron curtain during a 10-day trip.

In an exclusive interview, former manager Simon Napier-Bell reveals the strategy behind turning George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley into international stars. Managing WHAM! from 1983 to 1985, Simon recalls his initial encounter with the band and their ambitious goal of becoming the number one group within a year.

Despite initial skepticism, Simon and his business partner Jazz Summers proposed the idea of making WHAM! the first Western pop group to perform in China, which intrigued George Michael. This bold move led Simon on a challenging journey to secure the opportunity, facing language barriers and cultural differences.

After persistent efforts and clever tactics, Simon succeeded in persuading Chinese ministers to allow WHAM! to perform in China. The band’s historic concerts in Beijing and Guangzhou garnered significant attention globally, propelling WHAM! to newfound fame.

Although the tour did not bring substantial financial gains, it generated invaluable publicity for both WHAM! and China. Simon’s strategic approach not only showcased Western culture to Chinese audiences but also attracted foreign investments that contributed to the development of modern Beijing.

The upcoming documentary features restored footage of WHAM!’s groundbreaking visit to China, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the band’s experience and the impact of their performances. Simon’s innovative techniques and determination played a pivotal role in shaping this historic event.

As the world commemorates the 10th anniversary of George Michael’s passing, fans can relive the iconic moments of WHAM!’s journey through the documentary. Simon fondly remembers George as a talented songwriter with a mesmerizing voice.

WHAM! 10 Days in China will premiere in cinemas on July 28, with ticket sales starting on June 24. For more information, visit www.wham10daysinchina.com. Simon Napier-Bell’s book, “I’m Coming to Take You to Lunch,” is also available now.
