“Welsh Couple Granted Approval to Breed Guinea Pigs for Eco-Home Meat Production”

A couple in rural Wales has received approval to construct an eco-home and has revealed intentions to breed and consume guinea pigs as part of their sustainable living plan. Dave and Mayu Phillips were granted permission by Pembrokeshire County Council for their development, which includes maintaining small livestock for meat production.

Situated in a well-liked area of south Pembrokeshire near tourist attractions such as Tenby and Saundersfoot, the site will also host pigeons and rabbits for food as the couple aims to live in an environmentally conscious manner on their property.

During a planning committee session, Mr. Phillips, a long-time resident of Pembrokeshire, emphasized that the project is his way of positively contributing to the region’s future. The proposed eco-home will have minimal impact, with plans to increase honey and walnut production on-site, along with raising small livestock.

Councillor Mark Carter raised inquiries about the choice of animals for meat, specifically mentioning guinea pigs and rabbits. Mr. Phillips clarified that these guinea pigs are not like the typical pets and are bred solely for meat, similar to raising rabbits for consumption.

The project falls under the One Planet Development initiative, a Welsh planning policy that encourages sustainable living and working on personal land, permitting construction on rural sites that might otherwise be restricted.

Expressing their passion for the One Planet movement, Mr. and Mrs. Phillips highlighted the importance of living sustainably in today’s world with limited resources. The One Planet Council endorses the proposals, emphasizing the benefits of sustainable living for individuals and the environment.

The One Planet Development approach assesses individuals’ ecological footprints to gauge resource consumption levels, promoting reduced footprints at the household level for overall environmental benefits.
