A man’s arrest in Saskatchewan, captured in a viral video and later released without charges, is now under investigation by the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT). The incident occurred on October 6 when Battlefords RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle at Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation, leading to the man’s injury.
The vehicle, failing to stop, was found to be driven by an individual with a suspended license and a warrant. While the driver was arrested without resistance, two passengers, a man and a woman, were also present. The man passenger refused to comply with police orders, resulting in officers forcibly removing him from the vehicle for arrest and calling emergency medical services for further evaluation.
Released without charges initially, the man required additional medical attention, as reported by the RCMP. Dee-ann Sakascootch, the man’s sister-in-law, recorded the incident and shared it on social media, alleging that the man’s arm was broken during the arrest. The video depicted the man, who appeared disoriented and struggling, while officers explained the situation to Sakascootch.
Despite attempts to handle the man’s disabilities with care, the situation escalated quickly, leading to the man being forcibly removed from the vehicle by officers. The man was eventually arrested for obstruction and resisting arrest. The family declined to comment on the incident, and the First Nation community deferred to the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations for a future media statement.
Given the man’s injury, SIRT has been informed and is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
