“Violence Erupts at Anti-Immigration Protest”

Two individuals have been apprehended, and law enforcement officers were rushed to a medical facility following chaotic scenes at an anti-immigration demonstration.

Authorities mentioned that a considerable number of resources were dispatched to Thetford, Norfolk, during the previous evening following the assembly of a large group on a residential street. Some members of the group purportedly tried to enter a residence and engaged in altercations with law enforcement when they intervened.

According to the police, one male officer was hit with a rock, a female officer was bitten, and another officer was spat at. Two arrests were conducted for various offenses, including public disorder, harassment, and possession of a weapon deemed offensive.

A man in his forties is currently in police custody. Brian Thompson, a 68-year-old resident of Thetford, has been accused of possessing an offensive weapon, namely a wooden bat. He has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on August 25.

A representative for Norfolk Police stated, “At approximately 9:30 pm, officers were alerted to reports that certain individuals within the group were attempting to access a residential property.

“As law enforcement intervened, members of the group displayed physical aggression towards the officers – two were hospitalized after a male officer was struck with a rock, and a female officer was severely bitten, resulting in a break in the skin.

“A third officer was also subjected to spitting.”

Earlier, a large crowd had amassed outside the police station for the protest, which officials described as mostly peaceful. The unrest followed previous disturbances on Tuesday night, during which windows were shattered, fences were breached, and a group attempted to force entry into a residential property.

The upheaval was triggered by rumors that the properties were being utilized to accommodate asylum seekers. Social media footage depicted five men being escorted from the houses by police as an enraged crowd jeered and chanted “get out.”

Local Labour MP Terry Jermy condemned the turmoil, expressing in a statement, “Individuals have been forcibly removed from their homes – a sanctuary – with reports of the public breaking into residences, confiscating property, and breaking windows.

“This must have been extremely distressing for the occupants of these properties and concerning for neighboring residents. I strongly denounce this conduct, and I am aware that many Thetford residents share my repugnance and apprehension.

“In the aftermath of these incidents, numerous local residents from diverse backgrounds have reached out to my office, expressing fears for their safety. I am unaware of the immigration status or legal standing of the individuals housed in these properties, but I recognize them as human beings entitled to the same rights we all anticipate in this nation.

“Regardless of our personal opinions on immigration, the enforcement of mob rule and vigilantism is intolerable.”
