Mike Huckabee, the United States ambassador to Israel, strongly criticized the actions of Israeli settlers who besieged a Palestinian American family’s home in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, labeling it as a “horrific act of terror.” Settlers have been gathering near the residence in the village of Qusra since Sunday, causing distress to the occupants despite attempts by the Israeli military to resolve the situation.
The group of settlers, which at times included dozens of individuals, engaged in throwing stones, trying to damage a nearby stone wall, and preventing the family from leaving the house while their supplies were running low. Qusai Abu Rida, who had barricaded himself in the house with his teenage son for protection, revealed that they were eventually relocated to another home by the Israeli military but are still confined to the area.
While the Israeli military did not confirm the relocation of any residents, owner Loui Ridi, speaking from Ohio, disclosed that the settlers had been targeting his Qusra property for several months before the recent escalation. Huckabee mentioned that Israeli security forces have taken action at their request to remove the individuals responsible for the distressing siege.
The situation in Qusra has sparked concerns, with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights denouncing the actions aimed at forcing residents off their land. The Canadian government, among others, deems the expansion of settlements in the West Bank as a violation of international law. Recent interventions by Israeli troops aimed to restore order, including the dismantling of illegal outposts and detaining one individual.
The ongoing violence in the region has drawn condemnation from human rights organizations and foreign governments, with accusations directed at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for overlooking settler attacks. Despite the Israeli military condemning the siege and declaring the area a closed military zone, settlers returned and obstructed the roads with rocks.
Qusra, situated in a volatile area of the northern West Bank, has witnessed previous incidents of violence, including attacks on a mosque and deadly clashes resulting in casualties on both sides. The expansion of settlements, disputed by the international community, poses a challenge to the prospects of a Palestinian state in the occupied West Bank, as Palestinians aspire to have the territory as part of their future state. Conversely, settlers argue for Israeli sovereignty over the area based on historical, religious, and security grounds.
