“Union Leader Condemns Farage’s Party for Threatening Workers’ Rights”

Nigel Farage and his party, dubbed as “rebadged Tories,” are being criticized by a senior trade union leader for not supporting workers, as mentioned in a speech at the GMB annual congress in Blackpool. Gary Smith, the General Secretary of GMB, expressed concern over Reform’s intentions to target hard-fought employment rights, contrasting the efforts of GMB members with the pro-Thatcher stance of Reform’s leaders.

Despite Reform’s attempts to court union members, including a recent poll showing equal support for Labour and Reform among unionized workers, there is contention over Reform’s proposal to repeal the Employment Rights Act. This Act safeguards against exploitative practices such as zero hours contracts and fire and rehire, and strengthens sick pay, protection against unfair dismissal, and entitlements to parental leave.

The GMB, a prominent supporter of the Labour party, is expected to reaffirm its allegiance, even amid tensions between union leaders and the Government regarding party strategy. Affiliated unions, including GMB, Unite, and Unison, have previously stated that Keir Starmer should not lead the party into the next election.

In his address, Mr. Smith urges union members to reject Reform, cautioning that the party aims to undermine unions and their rights. He emphasizes that Reform’s history aligns more with anti-union sentiments and policies that have negatively impacted communities. The push by Reform against workers’ rights has been found to be at odds with public sentiment, as highlighted in a significant poll supporting the policies outlined in the Employment Rights Act. Additionally, polling conducted by the TUC and Hope not Hate shows widespread public support for measures such as guaranteed hours contracts, day one sick pay, and an end to fire and rehire practices.
