A woman shared her experience of traveling to Lithuania for a hip replacement due to extended NHS waiting lists causing excruciating pain. Nicky Hatton, aged 59, had been dealing with osteoarthritis for three years until she reached a point in September where an X-ray revealed her hip was in severe condition. Despite being advised to use a walking stick and enduring four more months of agony, she was then informed that she would have to wait at least another year for the operation within the NHS.

Facing the dilemma of prolonged suffering, Nicky, a mother of two, felt compelled to seek treatment abroad, reflecting a trend of increasing numbers of Britons seeking medical care overseas. The confirmation of her hip being critically damaged led to her general practitioner recommending a replacement.

Describing her pain as akin to having “broken glass in my hip,” Nicky from Chatteris, Cambs, expressed the intense discomfort she endured, resorting to frequent co-codamol intake and experiencing significant mobility limitations and weight gain. Frustrated by the extended waiting period within the NHS, she explored private healthcare options, discovering a clinic in Lithuania called Nord Orthopaedics offering the procedure at a significantly lower cost than in the UK.

In April of this year, Nicky, who also cares for her disabled adult son, underwent the hip replacement in Kaunas, Lithuania, marking a significant improvement in her condition post-surgery. She highlighted the drastic positive change in her mobility and mood since the operation, emphasizing the impact the prolonged pain had on her well-being.

Recent data indicating a rise in NHS elective waiting lists in England has raised concerns, with officials attributing the strain on the healthcare system to factors like heatwaves. The surge in Britons seeking medical treatment abroad and the increasing number of private healthcare admissions in the UK have been notable trends, reflecting challenges faced by the NHS in meeting patient needs.
