The UK is facing a power cut alert from the Met Office today due to strong gale-force winds hitting the coast. The severe weather conditions are expected to persist throughout the evening.
A yellow weather warning has been issued by the national forecaster for a significant stretch of the southern coast, encompassing numerous regions spanning over 351 miles. Officials caution that tens of thousands of residents in England and Wales may encounter transportation disruptions and heightened risks from large waves propelled by 55 mph gusts.
Of particular concern is the potential for “loss of power and other services” in the most affected areas. The Met Office’s warning, initiated at 9 am today, will remain in effect until 7 pm this evening. Following overnight wet and windy weather, the forecast predicts the progression of strong southwest to westerly winds from Cornwall towards Sussex during the day.
Gusts ranging from 45 to 50 mph are anticipated along coastal areas, with isolated spots possibly experiencing speeds of up to 55 mph. The warning highlights the possibility of disruptions to weekend activities, power outages, and minor travel disturbances.
Although the warnings cover regions like London and South East England and South West England, the Met Office assures that there is no immediate threat to life or significant structural damage from the winds. However, coastal residents are advised to exercise caution, especially around large waves, cliffs, and while walking pets.
In preparation for potential power cuts, individuals are advised to gather essential items such as torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack. Staying informed about changing weather conditions by monitoring forecasts is recommended.
