“UK Faces Dental Crisis: Fewer Than 10% of Practices Accepting NHS Patients”

Fewer than 10% of dental practices in the UK are currently accepting new NHS patients, according to a recent investigation. The study reveals that it is extremely challenging for adults in most regions to secure an appointment with an NHS dentist, with the exception of the West Midlands and London areas where a higher number of practices are open to new NHS patients.

Although there have been minor improvements since a similar investigation was conducted two years ago, advocates argue that progress has been slow under the Labour government. They are calling for increased funding to ensure universal access to dental care. In response to the oral health crisis in the nation, The Mirror has initiated the Dentists for All campaign to address the issue of people resorting to extracting their own teeth due to lack of access to dental services.

Adrian Ramsay MP, health lead for the Green Party, criticized the government for the limited access to dental care and emphasized the need for urgent action. A recent survey by the Green Party revealed that less than 10% of dental practices in England are accepting new NHS patients, with some practices having waiting lists extending up to four years.

The Green Party’s investigation also highlighted the inadequate funding for NHS dentistry over the years. Despite a slight increase in the annual budget to £3.5 billion for 2024/25, there is a need for an additional £1.5 billion annually to restore NHS dentistry as a universal service accessible to all individuals seeking care. The BDA Chair echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the necessity for sustainable funding to address the ongoing crisis in dental care.

In response to the escalating problem, Labour has announced initiatives to enhance dental training and expand professional registration exams for overseas-trained dentists in regions facing severe dental shortages. The government has emphasized its commitment to improving access to dental care through reforms to the dental contract and preventive programs targeting children to promote oral health from a young age.

The Department of Health and Social Care acknowledged the challenges in accessing dental care and highlighted the government’s efforts to rebuild NHS dentistry and enhance workforce sustainability through increased training opportunities and streamlined regulations for dentists.
