“UK Braces for Third Heatwave, Temperatures to Exceed 35C”

The UK is currently experiencing its third heatwave in a row, with temperatures set to surpass 35C in certain regions later this week. South east England has officially met the heatwave criteria after three consecutive days of temperatures above 28C as reported by the Met Office on Monday.

Forecasts indicate that temperatures will continue to climb across the UK throughout the week, with more areas expected to reach their local heatwave thresholds. Southern England may see temperature highs around 32C on Tuesday, increasing to 33C on Wednesday and 34C on Thursday, with isolated areas potentially reaching 35C by Friday and Saturday.

On Monday, the highest temperature recorded was 34C in Teddington, south-west London. While southern regions will face escalating hot weather starting Monday evening, a north-south divide will persist in the first half of the week. Scotland is predicted to experience stronger winds and rain on Tuesday, keeping temperatures closer to the seasonal average.

By the weekend, warm air is projected to reach northern parts of the UK, leading to increased humidity and a heightened risk of showers or isolated thunderstorms. The following week, temperatures are expected to slightly decrease, although many areas will remain warm and dry according to the Met Office.

Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates advised the public to take precautions against the heat and sun. He noted that the UK is entering its third heatwave of the year but clarified that this heatwave is not anticipated to break records like those in May and June. Although temperatures are not expected to reach previous highs, southern England may experience several days in the low 30s, with some areas potentially hitting 34-35C later in the week.

Amber heat health alerts have been issued for the Midlands and southern England by the UK Health Security Agency, warning of significant impacts on health and social care services due to high temperatures. Similar alerts have been issued for Yorkshire and northern England, with potential water-related incidents across the areas, including risks from cold water shock and drowning.

The Met Office also cautioned about the possibility of “tropical nights” in England, where temperatures may not drop below 20C. National Rail Enquiries advised train passengers to stay updated due to the heatwave, while vehicle breakdown rescue services are expected to be busier than usual. Drivers are urged to carry water and conduct essential vehicle checks before traveling, especially checking tyre pressures, coolant levels, and oil levels.

Tony Rich from the AA emphasized the importance of taking heat precautions, suggesting regular breaks during journeys and avoiding travel during the hottest part of the day. The Met Office highlighted the expected high UV and pollen levels during the week, advising people to use sun protection and be aware of pollen levels in their area.
