A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta is experiencing a surge in interest following a mention on a popular American TV show, with hopes of a busy summer season. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was featured in an episode of the acclaimed medical drama series, “The Pitt,” where a character plans a visit to the site in the Canadian Rockies. The site, located 150 kilometers south of Calgary, was historically used by Indigenous peoples to guide bison herds over a cliff for hunting.
The interpretive center at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump delves into Blackfoot culture, local ecology, and archaeological discoveries, offering visitors a unique experience. Quinton Crow Shoe, the head of marketing at the site, mentioned an increase in visitor interest sparked by the TV show’s mention, leading to a surge in social media engagement. The site, designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981, normally welcomes around 60,000 visitors annually.
Crow Shoe expressed optimism that the recent attention will result in higher footfall, especially during the peak season from May to September. Additional promotions, including discounts through the Canada Strong Pass, have also contributed to the positive trend. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is part of a network of attractions in southern Alberta, creating a broader tourist experience for visitors exploring the region.
Travel Alberta capitalized on the show’s mention by releasing a promotional video featuring the characters against the backdrop of the site’s cliffs. Alberta’s Culture Minister, Tanya Fir, shared the TV clip on social media, emphasizing the global impact of Alberta’s historical and cultural landmarks. The collaborative efforts aim to boost tourism and showcase the rich heritage of the region to a wider audience.
