“Trump Slump: Canadian Tourism Decline Hits Las Vegas”

The decrease in Canadian travel to Las Vegas is a growing concern tied to U.S. President Donald Trump’s actions towards Canada, impacting the tourism industry in Sin City significantly and emerging as a key topic in the upcoming midterm elections.

Nevada Democrats are seizing this decline, attributing it to Trump’s trade policies and strained relations with Canada, which is a primary source of international visitors to the state.

Ahead of the critical November vote, the party is emphasizing the “Trump Slump” effect on Las Vegas tourism, highlighting the 43% drop in visitors in August.

The Nevada Democrats, along with the influential Culinary Workers Union Local 226, are connecting the dwindling Canadian tourism numbers to local politicians supportive of Trump, such as Governor Joe Lombardo, who is facing unexpected competition in the current race despite his previous popularity.

Diana Valles, the union’s president, directly blames Trump for the tourism crisis, stressing the adverse impact on workers and families in Nevada due to the declining Canadian visits.

Recent data shows a continued decline in tourist numbers, airport arrivals, and hotel occupancy rates, with only half of downtown Las Vegas rooms occupied in August, partly attributed to the Canadian tourism decrease.

Last year witnessed a 17.4% drop in Canadian visits to Las Vegas, marking one of the steepest declines on record, significantly contributing to the largest visitor decrease outside of the COVID-19 pandemic since 1970.

MGM Resorts CEO Bill Hornbuckle expressed concerns about the reduced international travel to Las Vegas and emphasized the importance of Trump’s support in boosting the industry, especially in attracting 100 million international visitors annually.

The impact of reduced Canadian visits on Las Vegas is evident, with local businesses and workers feeling the economic strain, as highlighted by a decline in tourism-dependent jobs, cut shifts, and reduced hours.

The situation has also become a focal point in political campaigns, with Democratic Representative Susie Lee leveraging an anti-trade war stance in her campaign against Republican opponent Marty O’Donnell, who supports Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods.

As the election approaches, the absence of Canadian visitors in Las Vegas remains a significant issue, reflecting the economic repercussions and political implications of strained Canada-U.S. relations.
